There are many reasons to trim a tree.  Removing large dead or threatening limbs being the most common.  Trimming the entire tree includes removing dead wood, crossing limbs & thinning areas of excessive growth to allow all remaining foliage to have unobstructed space to grow.  Trimming also reduces surface area and sail affect in the crown of the tree.  This reduces the potential for snow, ice, and wind loading.  In turn this reduces the potential for failure during storm events.  As trees mature a proper pruning schedule allows a large tree to develop the vertical and lateral strength required to resist the many storms it will witness during its lifetime.  

The tree pictured here is a 120′ Jeffery Pine growing along the fairway at Whitehawk Ranch Golf Club, Clio, CA.  Robert Kelly Tree Care thinned the entire tree due to heavy wet snow loads that are common on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada mountains.  The open fairway allowed unobstructed straight-line winds to confront this tree during many storm events.  This tree began its life in a forest environment.  The forest was removed to create the golf course, at this time its forest protection zone was removed, making it very susceptible to wind throw, an occurrence that brings down many large trees in the mountains of California.  This tree is still very healthy and happy to this day.
